Information Technology

The strategy followed by LED's information technology division is to build the capacity and fundamental infrastructures that allow our in-state technology businesses to grow faster and to present a situation where out-of-state firms will be attracted to locate facilities and jobs here.

With more than 350 IT companies in Louisiana today, the state is primed for growth in the industry. Our IT strategy calls for accelerating positive growth in the following initiatives:

  • Expand Louisiana's IT companies and improve their bottom line
  • Improve the capacity of Louisiana's workforce
  • Connect the state's universities, government and industry for collaboration
  • Recruit out-of-state IT organizations to locate facilities and jobs in Louisiana

Louisiana maintains three IT incubators around the state - the Louisiana Tech Technology Incubator, the Louisiana Technolgy Incubator for Entrepreneurial Success at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, and the Louisiana Business and Technology Center.

The Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI) connects at least five supercomputers located at major research universities around the state. This allows for the transmission of 40 billion bits of data per second (20,000 times faster than the standard cable modem that many of us have at home). As a result of LONI, the state's board of regents has become a member of the National Lambda Rail (NLR), a nationwide grid computing infrastruture that is expected to have the same effect on our nation's technological infrastructure as the internet highway system has had on internet commerce.

Linked up to LONI is the Louisiana Immersive Technology Enterprise (LITE), a state-of-the-art advanced visualization facility in Lafayette, encompassing the world's first six-sided, digital virtual reality cube as well as the world's largest digital 3-D auditorium.
